Farmers cope with climate change by using mobile technology

WeTrace is an innovative way of farming using mobile technology. More than 400 vegetable farmers in the Philippines and Vietnam were the first recording their farming data via tablets and mobile phones. The computer-based traceability system behind the WeTrace App analyses the farming data and helps the farmers apply good agricultural practices. This is how they comply with ASEAN GAP, fair trade criteria as well as organic requirements. Farmers are benefitting through improved productivity and product quality. Regional cooperatives, national producer associations and supermarkets can use the data and reports gathered by the traceability system for making decisions. As a result, producers and buyers are well connected and built long-term business relationships.

Climate data help farmers adapt to climate change
The traceability system also collects climate relevant data and will, in the near future, assess the site-specific climate risks and vulnerabilities. This is how the mobile technology will support farmers in increasing the climate resilience of their farms and crops and adapting to changing climatic conditions.
WeTrace works in two directions: it records the farmers’ data, but also provides information on daily weather forecasts, farming tips and information on when and where to sell. The mobile phone as an information and communication tool has the potential to extend agriculture extension services to unattended markets. Access to technical and market information can contribute to increased yields and farmers` income.

The IT-based data management system behind WeTrace was developed by the German Knowledge Intelligence Applications GmbH (KIAG), that is based in Cologne. Co-funded by the develoPPP.de fund of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development the KIAG implemented the pilot project in the Philippines between 2013 and 2015 and respectively in Vietnam since 2015.
